RSR Group is consistently in the top tier of recommended distributors for new FFL dealers. They have a deep catalog, a working e-commerce dealer portal, and a relatively predictable application process. This guide walks through the steps in the order an applicant encounters them, and what to do once your account is approved.
For broader context on RSR’s catalog and how their pricing compares to other distributors, see our RSR Group distributor page.
What you need before you start the application
Have these documents in hand before opening RSR’s dealer signup form. Distributors universally reject applications that arrive incomplete:
- Active FFL. Either a Type 01 dealer license or a higher-tier FFL. The FFL must be valid and not within 30 days of expiration.
- State sales tax / resale certificate. Issued by your state revenue department. RSR uses this to honor your tax-exempt status on wholesale purchases.
- Business license. The local or state business operating license that ties your FFL to a registered business.
- Government-issued photo ID. Driver’s license is fine.
- Bank or credit-card information. RSR processes most orders on credit-card terms initially. Net terms come later, after a buying history is established.
The application itself
RSR’s dealer application is filled out on their website at rsrgroup.com/become-a-dealer. The fields you will see:
- Business legal name and DBA (if any)
- FFL number and expiration
- Contact name, phone, and email of the responsible person
- Shipping address (must match the FFL premises address for firearm shipments)
- Billing address
- Tax ID and resale certificate number
- References (sometimes optional, depending on FFL age)
You upload PDF copies of your FFL, sales tax certificate, and business license at the end of the form. Submit, and you receive an automated acknowledgment.
What happens during review
RSR’s account team verifies your FFL number against the ATF’s eZ Check system, confirms the business address matches, and reviews the supporting documents. If anything is missing or unclear, they email the responsible person on the application. Most clean applications are processed within 1-2 weeks; longer in peak season (late October through January).
You receive an email when the account is approved, with login credentials to RSRgroup.com’s dealer portal.
What to do during your first week with the account
The dealer portal gives you access to live inventory, wholesale costs, image and description data for thousands of SKUs, and the ordering interface. Brand-new accounts often make the same mistakes:
- Buying everything from RSR. RSR’s catalog is massive but they are not the cheapest on every SKU. Cross-shopping a single UPC against 18+ other distributors regularly turns up $20 to $80 differences on identical products.
- Not setting up distributor preferences. The portal lets you save addresses, default ship-to FFLs, and shipping preferences. Worth doing on day one to avoid mistakes on your first order.
- Ignoring NFA Class III pricing. RSR carries Class III items if your FFL is endorsed for them. If you have an SOT, set your account flags accordingly.
The smarter workflow is to use a price aggregation tool to compare RSR’s pricing in real time against the rest of your distributors. FirearmDistributors.com tracks 39+ brands and 20+ calibers across 19+ distributors including RSR, so you can quickly check whether RSR is the best price on a given SKU before clicking buy.
Common reasons RSR applications get rejected
- FFL within 30 days of expiration (renew first, then apply)
- Address on FFL does not match address on business license or sales tax certificate
- Missing state sales tax certificate (some states use different terminology — resale certificate, exemption certificate, seller’s permit)
- Application submitted under personal name when business is incorporated as LLC or corporation (use the business legal name)
What RSR is good at and what they aren’t
RSR is consistently strong for:
- Catalog breadth (especially handguns, AR-15 platform, and accessories)
- E-commerce-friendly dealer tools
- Fulfillment to retail customer (with appropriate FFL on the receiving end)
RSR is less competitive for:
- Some long-gun manufacturer exclusives (those are usually at Lipsey’s or Davidson’s)
- Specialty hunting and outdoor accessories (look at Sports South or Zanders)
- Pure-ammo bulk runs (look at distributors with stronger ammo programs)
The point of having multiple distributor accounts is exactly this: every distributor has products they win on, and aggregating across all of them is what consistently lowers your cost of goods sold.
Once approved, do this
Get your RSR pricing into FirearmDistributors.com alongside your other distributor accounts. The platform compares the same UPC across all 19+ distributors simultaneously, so when you’re shopping a SKU, you immediately see whether RSR is winning or whether Sports South, Lipsey’s, or another distributor has a better price right now.
